Reaching Kalimpong from Bagdogra or NJP

If you are planning a visit to Kalimpong, you are most likely to start your tour at either Bagdogra Airport or at NJP station. By Train

If you are coming by train, the nearest major rail station would be the New Jalpaiguri rail station or NJP. It is a 70 km journey from NJP to Kalimpong which would take little over 2 hours.

You may also start your tour from Malbazar in Dooars, though the distance and travel time from Malbazar to Kalimpong is not very different than that of NJP to Kalimpong.

By Flight

Those coming by flight would have to come to Bagdogra airport, which is the main airport in the region. From Bagdogra to Kalimpong the route is similar to the route from NJP to Kalimpong except the distance in this case increases by about 10 kms and the travel time also goes up by about half an hour. So from Bagdogra to Kalimpong is about 80 kms with a travel time of around 2.5 hours.

How to Travel

Like in any airport or railway station, you will have local taxis available at NJP or Bagdogra to take you to Kalimpong. The problem is the hassle of identifying a vehicle and then bargaining with local touts and taxi drivers. We provide you vehicles that will take you directly to your destination without any hassle. We have one of the largest fleet of tourist vehicles in the region.

Brief Description of the route

From Bagdogra you will have to come to Siliguri town through National Highway 10. The Siliguri bypass will take you to Salugara area where the NJP to Kalimpong route also meets the National Highway.

This part of the journey till Salugara is about 19 kms from the Airport and 12 kms from NJP. You will not find the route interesting as you will pass through the overcrowded Siliguri corridor area.

From Salugara the road suddenly opens up to Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, home of the pachyderm. About 13 kms drive through the forest will bring you to Sevok where the river Teesta ends its hilly journey and enters the plain. Here you will end your journey through the plains of North Bengal and enter the hills. Soon you will pass through villages such as Kalijhora, Lohapul, Rambhibazar etc and reach Teesta Bazar (31 kms from Sevok). Here we cross the river Teesta and go to its left bank, further a kilometre after crossing the Teesta bridge you will reach Chitrey, from Chitrey to Kalimpong is just 14 kms, but the steep uphill road will taste the power of your vehicles engine during this stretch.

Due to winding road and stiff twists and turns in the hills, plain drivers may not be best suited to drive in the hills. We do not recommend plain drivers self driving on this route.
